20 November 2019: Environmental Defenders Office news

Environmental Defenders Offices have been using the law to protect our climate, communities and natural environment, right across the country – from the Tarkine to the Kimberley - for over 30 years. Thank you for the role you have played in helping us deliver our work.

This year we have delivered hugely important victories for clients across the country; including the ground-breaking climate win over the Rocky Hill coal mine in NSW, halting the clearing of 20,000 hectares of native vegetation in the NT, and a crucial win over Adani's North Galilee Water Scheme in Queensland.

Now we're making another huge step forward for environmental justice, and, as  someone who is important to us,  I wanted you to be one of the first to hear about it.

The eight EDOs around the country – from Cairns to Hobart, Sydney to Perth – are coming together to launch a single, stronger, national Environmental Defenders Office.

This is an historic moment – one which will have a profoundly positive impact in Australia and beyond.

Together, we are creating the largest public interest environmental legal centre in the Australia-Pacific – a truly formidable powerhouse of expert lawyers and scientists, all using our unique skills to tackle the biggest environmental challenges of our time.

Uniting as a single Environmental Defenders Office will allow us to work on a national and regional scale, without losing our deep grassroots connections to the local communities we've served for decades.

It will help improve the delivery of local services across our eight offices, providing crucial access to justice and empowering thousands of Australians every year.

It will assist in the smooth, efficient administration of justice by allowing us to assist more vulnerable people with environmental and planning matters at low or no cost.

And it will enable us to take on more landmark, game-changing cases and press for crucial law reforms in service of our shared environment and the places, plants and animals we all hold dear.

This is important, vital work – not just for the communities we serve, but for all of us. Australians across the country are united by a deep respect for our natural environment. No matter who we are or where we are from, we all want to see it protected.

At the Environmental Defenders Office, we know this better than most. We see it every day in our work on behalf of farmers, conservation groups, Traditional Owners, and people from all walks of life and all manner of places, from the heart of the outback to the centres of our biggest cities.

Using the law, we act on behalf of all Australians to ensure our communities and ecosystems stay healthy, our water is protected, and our climate remains safe.

You can help us in this mission, as we launch the new, national Environmental Defenders Office. We will publicly launch on Thursday 21 November. Look out for announcements on FacebookTwitter Instagram and LinkedIn and please share with your friends, community and networks.

Another way you can help is by making a tax-deductible donation to our Environmental Defence Fund, to ensure that we have the financial resources we need, to push for vital law reform and take on the biggest environmental cases of our time.

I am proud to welcome you to the new, united Environmental Defenders Office – a bold, powerful force for environmental justice across the Australia-Pacific.

Kind regards,
David Morris
CEO – Environmental Defenders Office Ltd

P.S. Thank you for helping us become a national force for nature by sharing the news, spreading the word and donating to our Environmental Defence Fund
